The death of a soldier on guard duty at the Olivos Presidential Residence caused a major institutional stir and set off alarms at the very heart of the presidential security detail.
The incident occurred between 5 and 5:30 AM. Rodrigo Gómez, a 21-year-old member of the General San Martín Grenadier Regiment, was found dead at an internal post in the residence with a gunshot wound. The scene was immediately secured to allow specialists to work, and security and emergency protocols were activated.
According to official sources, the shot appears to have been fired from the soldier's own service weapon. A fellow guard raised the alarm, but by the time medical assistance arrived, the situation was irreversible. President Javier Milei was inside the presidential residence at the time of the incident but was not exposed to any direct risk.
The death of Rodrigo Gómez, at an emblematic location of Argentine political power, has uncovered a situation as tragic as it is delicate. It goes beyond a purely police matter and opens a broader debate about security, the care of military personnel, and institutional responsibility in the most sensitive areas of the state.
Federal Judge Sandra Arroyo Salgado took direct charge of the case and traveled to Olivos in the morning to oversee the first judicial and expert measures. The case has been provisionally docketed and will continue in the coming hours with further expert proceedings.
The investigation has been entrusted to the Federal Operational Units Directorate (DUOF) of San Isidro, which is working in conjunction with the Argentine Federal Police under the directives of the federal court. The tasks include ballistic analysis, scene reconstruction, review of internal security cameras, taking statements from personnel on duty, and an evaluation of the deceased soldier's psychological and functional status.
The episode has once again brought to the forefront the pressure and stress faced by personnel assigned to permanent security duties, especially in high-exposure posts like presidential protection.
From the National Presidency, an official communiqué was issued confirming the death of the military personnel and stating that “the corresponding protocols were immediately activated and emergency medical services attended, which confirmed the death.”
